Cool Marine Toys

007 Shortboard

Nicholas Notara designed a collapsible surfboard whose frame is made of carbon fiber.

Notara carefully designed the board to maintain the balance and weight of a traditional surfboard. The surfboard breaks down and becomes half its usual size with the help of a quick release level and flipping two pins. The board can also adapt to the rides needs with its swappable fin system. While the board is a beautiful example of great design, it is unfortunately just a concept at this time. Maybe one for the future with rising baggage costs and airlines becoming difficult to deal with when travelling with a board.

GoPro Surf Hero Camera

GoPro’s HD Surf HERO is the world’s only 1080p HD on-board video and still photo camera. Professional quality 1080p / 960p / 720p HD resolutions record at 30 and 60 frames per second (60 fps in 720p). Easily mounts to any surfboard in seconds. So light, even top pros claim they don't notice the camera on their boards.

The HD Surf HERO can also shoot 5MP photos automatically every 2 seconds while you surf. With the simple press of the shutter button on the paddle out you can capture photos during your entire surf. Other photo modes include 5 / 10 / 30 / and 60 second time lapse as well as single shot, triple shot, and self timer modes.

The batteries last for over 2.5 hours of HD video or automatic photo taking, so you can document your entire surf with a single push of the shutter button on the paddle out.

The included adhesive base mounts in seconds and is proven in heavy surf from Hawaii to Tahiti, Southern Mexico to Northern California. Or you can install an FCS™ fin plug into the deck of your board and then use our patent pending camera mounting plug to allen key your HD Surf HERO into the FCS™ plug. You can get this camera in New Zealand From the great folk at Southern Approach

Branson's Virgin Underwater Plane

The underwater plane designed for Richard Branson is called the Necker Nymph, and is the billionaire’s latest toy. The plane can dive to depths of up to 130ft and will cost Branson around 415,000 British pounds. Although the plane only submerges to 130ft, the billionaire has lofty aspirations to eventually create a plane that explore depths of 35,000 feet.

The Necker Nymph is relatively small and can only carry three people – a pilot and two passengers. The plane can easily glide through water and will be the perfect vehicle for Branson to travel alongside whales, dolphins, and other sea creatures. The entrepreneur is also hoping to uncover ancient shipwrecks with his new toy.

The underwater plane is highly sophisticated. It is powered by fighter jet technology and is piloted with a joystick. The underwater plane is also Eco friendly and has a low environmental impact. It has low noise emissions, uses low light, and is buoyant enough to avoid interfering with fragile ecosystems. The plane was designed by Hawkes Ocean Technologies and is the first underwater plane to ever be designed. It is an entirely new class of vehicle.

Richard Branson and Virgin’s new project seems to have the plot line for an upcoming James Bond movie. On February 20th, the billionaire entrepreneur will be launching his latest luxury vessel, the Necker Nymph.

The Necker Nymph is different from other sea going vessels in that it is being described as an underwater plane. The boat which is capable of launching from either land or sea uses a downward force applied on the wings in order to move through the ocean for up to two hours. Cruising speeds on the Nymph are between 2 to 5 nautical miles per hour and the boat (plane) can reach depths up to 100 feet.

The Nymph is capable of carrying two passengers as well as a pilot and during the voyage, passengers will be treated to a 360-degree underwater panoramic view. As part of the safety regulations and requirements, both riders will be required to follow standard suba procedures as well as be trained or accompanied by a certified pilot.

If you guessed this isn’t going to be cheap, you are correct. The underwater plane is available to rent at $25,000 per week for guests that are staying at Richard Branson’s luxury property called Necker Island. A one week stay at this private island will add an extra $300,000 to the final bill.

The only question left is who is the Bond girl?

As a teacher of technology it is inspiring to see developments like the Eco friendly Necker Nymph- when as teachers we ask the questions as part of the new curriculum - Can we make it? Should we make it? What impact will it have on society and the environment?

I think it a crying shame that the young people these days waste their time on those kick board things. There is nothing quite like the feeling of hoofing it down a Patiti Roller on 9ft of fibreglass. The waves down these parts got a kick like a mule.......braaaah.
