STUFF.co.nz - A severe tropical cyclone is believed to have extensively damaged the Cook Island of Aitutaki last night.
The Cook's Disaster Management Office in Rarotonga said this morning all contact was lost with the island, an hour's flight to the north.
A journalist at the Cook Island News in Rarotonga, Moana Motekaa, later said there were patchy communications getting through from Aitutaki.
"They are getting a lot of wind damage and all the communications are being destroyed," he said.
They had no reports so far of injuries.
Around 2000 people live on Aitutaki which is a popular tourist destination with luxury lodges built right on the edge of the lagoon.
Some text messages have reportedly been received from the island, saying homes had been flattened and resorts flooded.
The eye of Cyclone Pat had passed over Aitutaki and was now heading to the west of the main island of Rarotonga.
Weather forecasting website AccuWeather.com reported that hurricane-force winds, gusting up to 144kmh, large waves and heavy rains were affecting the islands.
An emergency cabinet meeting is underway in Rarotonga.
